I started this in summer 2014<br />and this is my last post in spring 2022, eight<br />years in total. I wanted a place to document<br />my ideas, practical work, thoughts, reflections,<br />meetings, references, links, archives and places for<br />stories around and within my research. This is<br />my final post.<br /><span> </span>During early weeks of Ukraine’s war with Russia<br />I followed a war diary from a Ukrainian photographer<br />and artist Yevgenia Belorusets. Publishers of this work<br />are Isolarii. This includes photographs, writing,<br />simple meditations on everyday life in Kyiv. It’s<br />a gentle reflection and reminds me a lot of<br />work by Svetlana Alexievich. Beloruset’s decision<br />to leave Kyiv and close her blog is inspiration for<br />my concluding post.<br /><span> </span>I am working on future projects. These include<br />motion graphics for a feature film. This work is<br />complete and this film launches with screenings in<br />Zagreb and London end of May 2022. I am working on<br />exhibitions in partnerships with the Holodomor<br />Museum. These are digital, virtual pieces of work<br />taking places in cities across Europe. I am working<br />on motion graphics for social media. I have three<br />potential venues. This will be physical posters,<br />images and screening of motion graphics. This will<br />take place from early-mid June until July.<br /><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4970070625950370448.post-66544401201076692022-04-24T23:07:00.000-07:002022-04-24T23:07:15.726-07:00 Proof Reads, Takflix and Submission – Statement on Current Events<p>I have completed final proof reads of my thesis texts. This<br />includes style details. Uses of en-dashes, em-dashes<br />hyphens, italics, special characters, special terms, capitalisation,<br />and apostrophes. This week I returned to Bringhurst’s<br />brilliant book, <i>Elements of Typographic Style </i>(1997). I used<br />this in my writing with Kate L. Turabian’s <i>Manual for<br />Writers</i> (2013). I am now using Bringhurst’s book as a basis<br />for a workshop I am designing for MA Graphic Design students.<br />In particular I am taking Bringhurst’s ideas of exploring<br />rhythm and musical harmony, structure in sound, with <br />page layout and physical structure. Bringhurst’s text is<br />available at <a href="http://readings.design"><i>readings.design</i></a>.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXI8TRfr2-1E4a1vLl9EkXyLxxgBHF3MDlHRAt6e2rOo0wCiFQjMSYMCTuyOPyyr5dVtFbUY2ZzIElvrrCAsYrbqfzwF4Wy0pNQtriblzvq1cjUb-RrN8wlT3YAijrmfYnNHgfUn45CxMsKCJA_7BJA_oAaeDkPIlHglvqBdiFci55uo3AlqMG4s5D/s3508/Page%20Proportions%20as%20Musical%20Intervals.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2496" data-original-width="3508" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXI8TRfr2-1E4a1vLl9EkXyLxxgBHF3MDlHRAt6e2rOo0wCiFQjMSYMCTuyOPyyr5dVtFbUY2ZzIElvrrCAsYrbqfzwF4Wy0pNQtriblzvq1cjUb-RrN8wlT3YAijrmfYnNHgfUn45CxMsKCJA_7BJA_oAaeDkPIlHglvqBdiFci55uo3AlqMG4s5D/w640-h456/Page%20Proportions%20as%20Musical%20Intervals.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Rhythm and structure in page layout, detail from <i>Elements<br />of Typographic Style</i>. <i>Source</i>: Bringhurst, 1997.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZAI-9kaXbrr69mWFDO9kyp7uQpqOMh_tcmUNzt2Pz25zzZBs3ZONxPiMtkhQUKMNWZ3Ub8YoMFDWUX2ZB9k2WpwkHadn1G0IWBfq6Taq-teleiBXgXfOt7axUZEHWEtI6lK4G72hqUY3EsPC7WkU6Fe7o0vmtzCX3AtZsH_viU3D9OhEboZqFlHQK/s3508/en%20dashes%20em%20dashes%20and%20hyphens.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2480" data-original-width="3508" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZAI-9kaXbrr69mWFDO9kyp7uQpqOMh_tcmUNzt2Pz25zzZBs3ZONxPiMtkhQUKMNWZ3Ub8YoMFDWUX2ZB9k2WpwkHadn1G0IWBfq6Taq-teleiBXgXfOt7axUZEHWEtI6lK4G72hqUY3EsPC7WkU6Fe7o0vmtzCX3AtZsH_viU3D9OhEboZqFlHQK/w640-h452/en%20dashes%20em%20dashes%20and%20hyphens.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Workshop details, from <i>Elements of Typographic Style</i>, 2022.<br /><i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br />I have completed watching my initial watchlist on<br />Takflix. My favourite of three films this week is<br /><i>Enter Through the Balcony</i> (Blazhan, 2020). This is a<br />documentary survey of architects, designers and<br />home owners. A central focus of this film is expansion<br />of Ukrainian apartments and apartment blocks using <br />balconies. Enter through the balcony is an advertising<br />term. This appears when larger apartments were<br />divided into smaller flats. These flats are now<br />accessible through balconies and were from Communist<br />times.<br /><br /><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/R0xlq-nvsAI" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Enter Through the Balcony Вхід через балкон</i><br />trailer. <i>Source</i>: Takflix, 2021.</span><br /><br />I have resubmitted my final PhD thesis. This<br />includes all examination changes. I am including a<br /><i>Statement on Current Events</i>. I wrote this as an<br />initial response to war in Ukraine when Russian forces<br />invaded. It is about research, about where my<br />project is now, where it was, my intentions and<br />motivations. It is about power in art and design practice.<br />It is what I can do as an individual to document<br />stories, to challenge, to express ideas and what design <br />and what power art has in creative practice and in<br />current events. I am reflecting on my position now as I <br />complete my work. I am ending with a drawing of<br />Ukrainian Easter eggs, Psanky. It is Ukrainian Easter <br />weekend this weekend. These drawings I use in my film<br />endings.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXeV_EjLbbJmly7e4vQi59TWlziOS-86icCpbvYl-E3jQTt0flVI9X3dIAwBIzNhItvaPTHvTMgUDXfxHJvCS8lxfab_91FFdUvNZE6jhmJrguF4Yh6Yecqq8qzvqA-xWqpnJCOeXZA1QA1DBamOZwskGVJGbXU_PnOx-nfuv9_-i3WjwKZVhfHnrS/s2325/Easter%20Eggs%20Diagrams.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2325" height="440" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXeV_EjLbbJmly7e4vQi59TWlziOS-86icCpbvYl-E3jQTt0flVI9X3dIAwBIzNhItvaPTHvTMgUDXfxHJvCS8lxfab_91FFdUvNZE6jhmJrguF4Yh6Yecqq8qzvqA-xWqpnJCOeXZA1QA1DBamOZwskGVJGbXU_PnOx-nfuv9_-i3WjwKZVhfHnrS/w640-h440/Easter%20Eggs%20Diagrams.jpg" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">References:<br /><br /></span><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Blazhan, R. This involves archiving my<br />PhD production files and my emails. I have come across<br />scans. These are from late 2015 to May 2018. These are<br />scans I sent to myself from photocopiers at work.<br />They document my research, books, ideas, interests,<br />drawings, diagrams and research supervision notes. I have<br />a scan of Smith and Dean’s book about Practice-led <br />Research (2009). This is my first reading on integrating<br />artistic practice with academic research. From my early<br />investigations into music and working with G sharp minor<br />I have a scan of a 12-inch from Huddersfield Music <br />Library. This is Scriabin’s <i>Second Symphony</i>. Scriabin<br />composed in G sharp minor. From what I remember this<br />symphony is not in this key. Kenneth Goldsmith’s<br /><i>Traffic</i> in Perloff’s work exploring poetry (2010). There<br />are references in this work to Oulipo poetry and my<br />scan is from 2016. My original scan of Sterne’s black<br />page from <i>Tristram Shandy</i> (2000) is here from 2016.<br />I hadn’t considered before there is a front and back<br />to this black page. One of my favourite scans is<br />from a book of Samuel Beckett’s production of <i>Happy<br />Days</i> (1986). I have two scans of this, one from 2016<br />and another from 2018, start and finish of my<br />scanning. This is a notebook of transcriptions of Beckett’s<br />production notes for this play. Editor James <br />Knowlson has included all errors, mistakes, omissions,<br />and gaps in this transcription. I have drawings from<br />2016. These are from title slates opening Eisenstein’s 1925<br />film <i>Strike</i>. Alison recommended it to me for this<br />reason. Not all this work was in my final thesis.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFZvqUibYKBuuSod9kw8BbobHbk426_-7Wu-q3ZM-jL7hb-ebV_ST8wI0PpoHom3riMPnxCp5tlCUBI9UQq_Q3MEh4hPLDCZvd8LuUkvqTHoliMvysbCooZJvRMl9W8uVQItWl-CrEMoFpmV-e1qPbBaaeujTbakiZtEJhP5VIYJETYhEdnYLkU4Vk/s2263/Practice%20Led%20Research%202016.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; Source:<br />Author.</span><br /><br />I have rediscovered <i>Takflix</i>, a brilliant Ukrainian<br />film streaming platform. I re-encountered this through a<br />talk at Visions du Réel with Ukrainian film makers,<br />exploring filming in resistance. Nadia Parfan was on this<br />panel and I was looking for her work. I have viewed<br />four films. <i>Mariupolis</i> by Mantas Kvedaravičius<br />a Lithuanian film maker who died from shooting<br />by Russian soldiers in April 2022. This film is from<br />2016. Kvedaravičius returned to <i>Mariupolis</i> this year<br />to make a second part to this film during Russia’s<br />current siege of Mariupol (e-flux, 2022). Another <br />feature film is Nadia Parfan’s 2019 film <i>Heat Singers</i>.<br />This was a brilliant view of a group of engineers who<br />have a work choir. I have watched two short films<br /><i>Dream Machine</i> in Ukrainian by Katerina Oliynik from<br />2018 and <i>Bridge</i> by Olena Moskalchuk and Oksana<br />Nosach from 2016. I have one more film lined up.<br />This is <i>Enter Through the Balcony</i> (Blazhan, 2020).<br />This is a brilliant way to watch Ukrainian films. It is<br />also a brilliant way for me to support Ukrainian culture,<br />individual film making and I have also sent these films<br />as gifts.<br /><br />Part of my final Ukrainian lesson in term one was<br />translating Ukrainian recipes. Below is a recipes for<br />Borsch. There are specific verbs in this recipes<br />to describe very particular aspects of food preparation.<br />For example кубиками, cubes, is to dice and<br />соломкою to straw, or make thin, strips, this is<br />for cabbage. I love how specific this is. Yelyzaveta<br />pointed out all this writing is very much in<br />present tense, very immediate, very much in a <br />particular moment. This relates to <i>Recipes for Baking<br />Bread</i> and my original intentions to use recipes to recount<br />stories from history. I love this contract, where language<br />from an immediate sense of present, now, appears with<br />stories from past events. This relates to ideas in my<br />thesis from Tolstoy’s use of ‘now’ in language in his<br />novels. These verbs also appear many times in first<br />person, we, form. This relates to my ideas of cooking,<br />baking and recipes as collective and shared activities.<br /><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">References:<br /><br />Beckett, S. I am now a member<br />of AHRC peer review college. My term is for four years and<br />begins this year, 2022. I completed my training at an event<br />on 10th of March. This was at the University of Manchester<br />Business School. This was fascinating in its insights into<br />role and structure of AHRC application processes and<br />panel reviews. It was also brilliant to attend an in-<br />person event.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie6bPEFpQdmk_MDsNC08-5nXOW_LmvTajuQVAtDMfFsKUeJyeV4j3x3sici72gncGy2iBwg65UvCKiAPyIUeSIwM1yINuksKED3ryFnU0jbNhTJUgccx4F_Vr-f4P2NL3yGc64Vxhi42P7fdsBBBxwOuR-acsKq8O6WssBWotq0iGOCUhEJtshCFbY/s490/ukri-ahrc-square-logo.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="408" data-original-width="490" height="333" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie6bPEFpQdmk_MDsNC08-5nXOW_LmvTajuQVAtDMfFsKUeJyeV4j3x3sici72gncGy2iBwg65UvCKiAPyIUeSIwM1yINuksKED3ryFnU0jbNhTJUgccx4F_Vr-f4P2NL3yGc64Vxhi42P7fdsBBBxwOuR-acsKq8O6WssBWotq0iGOCUhEJtshCFbY/w400-h333/ukri-ahrc-square-logo.png" width="400" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">AHRC UKRI logo 2022. Source: ukri.org, n.d.</span><br /><br /> I am considering how I describe public engagement of my<br />work and in my practice for academic audiences. On<br />Thursday 24th March I took part in a consultation<br />for my work at the University of Huddersfield. This<br />was run by a third party consultant. This is work<br />to develop public consultation strategies and a full<br />strategy map for the University of Huddersfield.<br />This was a fascinating experience and involved<br />discussion around language in my teaching and research<br />practice. I considered my live briefs and projects I<br />have run in year 2 and in particular spoke about work<br />I did in 2021 for NHS Calderdale and Huddersfield.<br />My second project for these clients was to promote<br />information, a resource for young people and their families<br />who are about to have MRI scans. NHS can benefit<br />from communication in this area. When people have<br />lack of access to information it can lead to distress,<br />expense and repeat scans. This costs money and is<br />avoidable through simple communication strategies.<br />This project has direction by Shyam Patel and<br />music by Joe Watson. A movie is below. This was<br />part of a wider launch to promote work in this area.<br /><br /><iframe allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/548995180?h=af7fa302d8&title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" width="640"></iframe>
</p><p><span style="font-size: x-small;"><a href="https://vimeo.com/548995180">NHS - MRI Scan Animation</a> from <a href="https://vimeo.com/motiongo">Motion-go</a> on <a href="https://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</span></p>As well as my teaching practice I referenced my<br />research and in particular spoke about my work with<br />Ukrainian communities. I spoke about audiences and<br />participants. I also spoke about mainstream<br />activities and specific academic audiences. I became<br />aware of differences and links between global and<br />local audiences and when these merge. For example<br />with my work with Ukrainian communities where local<br />interests and small community groups in Manchester<br />and other areas in West Yorkshire have become<br />international and global news events on a major<br />scale.<br /> I am working on ways to develop impact in my<br />research. This week I took part in two half-day<br />policy workshops. University of Huddersfield organised these <br />workshops by Institute for Government. This<br />was a fantastic and inspiring two half-days with lots<br />of opportunities for discussion and a lot of information.<br />I learned a lot about roles in government, roles of civil<br />service, house of lords and house of commons and how to<br />access policy makers in these areas. There was<br />discussion and analysis of profile. I spoke about my<br />new website. An image of this is below. I also <br />considered various roles and departments within<br />government and how my work can contribute to these<br />areas. For example, a fantastic presentation involving<br />work from an academic with OFCOM and how my work<br />may relate to departments and All Party Parliamentary <br />Groups within government. This was an inspiring<br />two days. It was also fantastic to connect with<br />other colleagues from the School of Arts and Humanities<br />at Huddersfield. Many of these conversations led to<br />interesting ideas and possible collaborations. It was<br />fantastic to find out more about colleagues’ work in<br />areas I know and areas I don’t.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://saranesteruk.co.uk/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="1458" data-original-width="2832" height="330" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKMqFo91_cS7ahTvuh6NEIkhHIhfZ3VQcrB1cL1Z5_fYLgnAU1-_ERydD0J2BSs7_bqJ0RcbGafbbAKha62amunh8WrvyGfDt6wEFG819x6kX7FEVpRMfudwFy_7dYc47TBhR6ClQB0E-vmXqvoyCvKC1SLpO1ZNANFSp6rYVCq05b31CQXmdFoSMp/w640-h330/Website.png" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Website 2022. This is a <br />collection of photographs from my trip to Ukraine in<br />September 2021, shot on 35mm film. Below are images<br />of Verdansky National Library of Ukraine. A statement<br />about these collections and archives are on British Library<br />blog pages <a href="https://blogs.bl.uk/living-knowledge/2022/03/memory-of-a-nation-the-vernadsky-national-library-of-ukraine.html">here</a> (British Library, 2022). Inside is an<br />amazing mural. I was not able to take photos, my<br />sketches are below. With stunning architecture is also<br />an atmosphere of study and work and beautiful<br />typography.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiyMReu3UAqComVu90PTaMTvJXYD0BzT2-jATTadbeiqS96mgy1otMUI5N6hhnK9-OzWLN2kBbW9Wce0pA7HvVi3VHnqxjGFnB5BzOqnuXDLEft-aGy--YP_T2VzquqQPtKe5FMprPEHLTdH9uNcyIVvaPCDT5iCna8Oq6in9ZDeor7IMSHZ4SP7E19=s1783" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1184" data-original-width="1783" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiyMReu3UAqComVu90PTaMTvJXYD0BzT2-jATTadbeiqS96mgy1otMUI5N6hhnK9-OzWLN2kBbW9Wce0pA7HvVi3VHnqxjGFnB5BzOqnuXDLEft-aGy--YP_T2VzquqQPtKe5FMprPEHLTdH9uNcyIVvaPCDT5iCna8Oq6in9ZDeor7IMSHZ4SP7E19=w640-h424" width="640" /></a><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />Verdansky National Library of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2021.<br /><i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /></p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiMEYeiY70Icr8igO63N_F5TDF-5zBCHdt48eUeTSBZfKBP2387xVPlWRRybwiidZwl09YrZAl5jEVC8q168mToZydT-RY3Ncb0ThIab-SZfsQQVocSpaq_p_HGIZjpG1cnOeY2ySHtde0bCy4__5ZWUQgbbWn565RPJhE1rHVFqdscPWuykFoqdpkT=s1784" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1178" data-original-width="1784" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiMEYeiY70Icr8igO63N_F5TDF-5zBCHdt48eUeTSBZfKBP2387xVPlWRRybwiidZwl09YrZAl5jEVC8q168mToZydT-RY3Ncb0ThIab-SZfsQQVocSpaq_p_HGIZjpG1cnOeY2ySHtde0bCy4__5ZWUQgbbWn565RPJhE1rHVFqdscPWuykFoqdpkT=w640-h422" width="640" /></a><br /></p><p><span style="font-size: x-small;">Verdansky National Library of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2021.<br /><i>Source</i>: Author.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: x-small;"> </span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjcm_ZmSPdPa-YuW-_yQH5x6tVaxhCbDYE5wtsdHIm62T5uSH4TQF4aCVad6v8bIfXo3Sv72W-kTLFruTe481H9tswPxJeySmFwgn6eXZu6nFgot1Qf-wJD4NkBFMdQqBXpIH_DSt66_WTLcweFGRnVIeY68mrrbLzO-57nDM2rVuOqUv1RuzPHscsZ=s1779" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1779" data-original-width="1195" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjcm_ZmSPdPa-YuW-_yQH5x6tVaxhCbDYE5wtsdHIm62T5uSH4TQF4aCVad6v8bIfXo3Sv72W-kTLFruTe481H9tswPxJeySmFwgn6eXZu6nFgot1Qf-wJD4NkBFMdQqBXpIH_DSt66_WTLcweFGRnVIeY68mrrbLzO-57nDM2rVuOqUv1RuzPHscsZ=w430-h640" width="430" /></a><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />Verdansky National Library of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2021.<br /><i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /></p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjZvjcs3Dta4IPCy77gYWBV35blGS4sDKtNpXvcRiUYAYMsXsIUYXaKurEW9IsHERP1dOg8lBQ95tQbPWD9DiI1vgV8GzTtMtNQE44SGreKgYR55GHCzhH2QA5UrCoEZ9n3RphfNv4QQlg50eijZK_Y3jHZqAfSRFU7ily1ytbe7wzwCFyM24sRk9u3=s2122" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2122" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjZvjcs3Dta4IPCy77gYWBV35blGS4sDKtNpXvcRiUYAYMsXsIUYXaKurEW9IsHERP1dOg8lBQ95tQbPWD9DiI1vgV8GzTtMtNQE44SGreKgYR55GHCzhH2QA5UrCoEZ9n3RphfNv4QQlg50eijZK_Y3jHZqAfSRFU7ily1ytbe7wzwCFyM24sRk9u3=w482-h640" width="482" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Verdansky National Library of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2021.<br /><i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhL6OslPy75uSomgwiTTlJC4B_AVRwS6OpSX-BeY1NIqUfUrOcFYeL8NDbklr30tI4Iodd7HiC3PyI9RU3ts3pQC0L5VsXZ1qob2P2HzBcbf_pH5VTOnRuVSJBQbTXvoDIsxR0eLIH5yqT1-UycFoVHvs1dL3hyr1LcBgqoLZVjQE56b-EWBNvgua0u=s1600" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhL6OslPy75uSomgwiTTlJC4B_AVRwS6OpSX-BeY1NIqUfUrOcFYeL8NDbklr30tI4Iodd7HiC3PyI9RU3ts3pQC0L5VsXZ1qob2P2HzBcbf_pH5VTOnRuVSJBQbTXvoDIsxR0eLIH5yqT1-UycFoVHvs1dL3hyr1LcBgqoLZVjQE56b-EWBNvgua0u=w640-h426" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Verdansky National Library of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2021.<br /><i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br />I travelled to Zaporizhzhia in south Ukraine. This was for<br />a visit to Dnipro-HES power station. I also visited<br />Sotsgorod, a socialist housing estate in Zaporizhzhia.<br />Dnipro-HES is a powered by water, a hydro electric<br />power station. There is a huge dam and on one side a<br />park dedicated to energy workers. I spent a lot of time<br />here, and there are beautiful views looking back over<br />Zaporizhzhia. This is a long Soviet style city all<br />formed around one 10 km street running through its centre.<br />I have discovered on Wikipedia Zaporizhzhia is<br />twinned with Birmingham UK. There are links in how<br />industrial this city is. There is a celebration of metal workers,<br />industrialisation and engineering. Russian troops are<br />now on borders of this city and have attacked<br />another power station south of Zaporizhzhia. A nuclear<br />power plant.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhsxyDMM_3T4ubZV_PJvIE2eBBvyLran8mzy1XmWk3qlLEjFAadZ9ygiWvDdX5VFQbVVN0_BaaWo86Cl0-KQYn19K_J1dCAXXT5LXbJC_9YEv9kfrcUMsJFIvTNFydvwi9jy3-qgIG1b7KtT85CnEVz_J2ZlTu5Qp6hEx02DCNvYjXfNVVsrCw-dsuw=s1193" style="margin-left: 1em; This was from Kyiv and was as scheduled. This<br />lesson was translating a Ukrainian test about war. This<br />included a lot of jokes about news reports I have seen,<br />memes and social media. It also included a lot of realities<br />of a country now at war. In a very short amount of time<br />Yelyzaveta pointed out how language is changing. Some of<br />this text is in Russian, some in Ukrainian and there are <br />derivates of Russian, Ukrainian and English works all<br />merging. There are also examples of language shifting,<br />changing, shortening and becoming more brutal, abrupt and<br />derogatory to adapt to new circumstances in Ukraine. This<br />is fascinating. This lesson was moving and an<br />emotional experience.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhpXjz-FFrdod5cUXxvNm1el8TOtzXydbZ13kIos5vcqr3ZRJW3oyQb0_56Y7ptTNHy0b95YVUfDlff1VacucPTcASaGjTua_mO2h2DBpmMf_wNCEuMO37IhrUspDAO84K3-9DDKDctm3t4oNpEsuMbcKgD21qJa_qnxq1oBpQs5TquE13mcTnhEc00=s2272" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="964" data-original-width="2272" height="272" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhpXjz-FFrdod5cUXxvNm1el8TOtzXydbZ13kIos5vcqr3ZRJW3oyQb0_56Y7ptTNHy0b95YVUfDlff1VacucPTcASaGjTua_mO2h2DBpmMf_wNCEuMO37IhrUspDAO84K3-9DDKDctm3t4oNpEsuMbcKgD21qJa_qnxq1oBpQs5TquE13mcTnhEc00=w640-h272" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Text extract 2022. <i>Source</i>: Yelyzaveta Taranukh.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjlL2Xl3GwOjbVXFrZsGZI1q_ubjOzUPrwyKjA_tV55ikk-d12Sam8vHXiypPLGe0cMGP9JP-3JsoqbMcHgrC6Jo4e9qKlVX1wAo2afbRr-UeVoAon5SwSPazi1MXc2MftknqlpqrlOe56SDPNa5BTR6orbRqewPyVafuT6rnXCGEd0KAuCmGYfnXAG=s3028" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3028" data-original-width="2200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjlL2Xl3GwOjbVXFrZsGZI1q_ubjOzUPrwyKjA_tV55ikk-d12Sam8vHXiypPLGe0cMGP9JP-3JsoqbMcHgrC6Jo4e9qKlVX1wAo2afbRr-UeVoAon5SwSPazi1MXc2MftknqlpqrlOe56SDPNa5BTR6orbRqewPyVafuT6rnXCGEd0KAuCmGYfnXAG=w464-h640" width="464" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Ukrainian Lesson notes 2022. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiHy_kexEoShtLon1k6FW2UGoRSUvZvz5hoDGxZzefOuAOwvNea_HArqmiZlUYC2VJPMRGyq0pFrSLdI-cZ9pbkv_Ov5WF7S9lVpj9bRxUsKGqNQe71MLDcMIG8FplYBbVFNHSZPYp71REcwo44ZsoIbRqn4GoTS2jpObpfIiRZAFAGu-J_AVC2pF4N=s3028" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3028" data-original-width="2200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiHy_kexEoShtLon1k6FW2UGoRSUvZvz5hoDGxZzefOuAOwvNea_HArqmiZlUYC2VJPMRGyq0pFrSLdI-cZ9pbkv_Ov5WF7S9lVpj9bRxUsKGqNQe71MLDcMIG8FplYBbVFNHSZPYp71REcwo44ZsoIbRqn4GoTS2jpObpfIiRZAFAGu-J_AVC2pF4N=w464-h640" width="464" /></a><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />Ukrainian Lesson notes 2022. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br />My homework from two weeks ago is about normal life in<br />England. This was CND piggybacking an existing<br />campaign for SOS NHS. CND’s campaign is <i>Nurses<br />Not Nukes</i> to encourage spending on NHS rather than <br />nuclear weapons. My campaign is piggybacking on<br />CND’s work. My slogan for my banner reads<br />Слава Україні. This translates as Glory to Ukraine.<br />This is about me declaring my support and<br />solidarity with Ukrainian justice, freedom. This is<br />about protecting a country, its national identity,<br />its people, its physical locations, geographies,<br />maps, borders and boundaries. This is also about<br />freedom of speech. It is about Ukraine as a rich,<br />cultural, independent state. It is about my work,<br />it is about Holodomor, it is about raising<br />awareness of Soviet relationships with Ukraine<br />throughout history, it is about everything I believe<br />and stand for and I have learnt in my work and my<br />research, about Ukraine, about the people I meet <br />and work with. It is about me contributing my<br />voice to protecting something I believe in and love.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhOK0RgzQ-X7DUiJA98hLc7ZvJnc6XPA3vOrJMC_imhcfIaQq0YckCZNuCaUEOr_tP3QI82eVM6bSU7tzxGvWLBCHUM5LW83ikRhSYQ8PNa-jo5KkBR1d3_9vKFskcExE90ZIGFTY7pk3hs9i1kf95ODvZPQuPtHpeeGcEg8HoqsWlu6T2A7Tul_Hi4=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhOK0RgzQ-X7DUiJA98hLc7ZvJnc6XPA3vOrJMC_imhcfIaQq0YckCZNuCaUEOr_tP3QI82eVM6bSU7tzxGvWLBCHUM5LW83ikRhSYQ8PNa-jo5KkBR1d3_9vKFskcExE90ZIGFTY7pk3hs9i1kf95ODvZPQuPtHpeeGcEg8HoqsWlu6T2A7Tul_Hi4=w640-h480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Nurses Not Nukes</i> Demonstration, organised by West<br />Yorkshire CND, 2022. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjVcSwqK8G27kIVbj1LbHpb3cB6sxqUy9kqRMsvjb_FN0pUKCqJyNLzLrhF6brW-eCqPy7VsQEjxR7T4IC_Ri9KoqvB8QXZu_9UU22ohcEQ9_Jzt9ALwamNgLsEblGUb267wjiYuOSR3bfj0zwimKH_9RKyK0PQmx9DnhabyGcAD5lhiDA7-6Yoc0BI=s2218" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1404" data-original-width="2218" height="406" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjVcSwqK8G27kIVbj1LbHpb3cB6sxqUy9kqRMsvjb_FN0pUKCqJyNLzLrhF6brW-eCqPy7VsQEjxR7T4IC_Ri9KoqvB8QXZu_9UU22ohcEQ9_Jzt9ALwamNgLsEblGUb267wjiYuOSR3bfj0zwimKH_9RKyK0PQmx9DnhabyGcAD5lhiDA7-6Yoc0BI=w640-h406" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Banner Designs: Слава Україні, 2022. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /> </p><p><span> </span>This week before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine I<br />recommended a reading list of Ukrainian materials to<br />Huddersfield University library. This from a long<br />list of nine has a short list of four. My first is<br /><a href="https://shop.the-tls.co.uk/a-loss-the-story-of-a-dead-soldier-told-by-his-sister-9783838215709"><i>A Loss – The Story of a Dead Soldier Told by His Sister</i></a>.<br />This is by Olesya Khromeychuk who I follow on<br />Twitter. My second and third books are both from<br />Osnovy Publishing, a Kyiv based publisher. This<br />is <a href="https://osnovypublishing.com/product/kateryna"><i>Kateryna</i></a>, a poem by Taras Shevchenko,<br />national legend in Ukraine for writing in Ukrainian.<br />With illustrations by Nikolai Tolmachov. This is one<br />of very few translations of Shevchenko’s work into<br />English. Also by Osnovy Publishing is <a href="https://osnovypublishing.com/product/the-timeless-way-of-building"><i>The Timeless<br />Way of Building</i></a>. This is a Ukrainian translation<br />of an architectural text by Christoper Alexander.<br />My final book on my shortlist is <a href="https://books.huri.harvard.edu/books/the-frontline"><i>The Frontline: Essays<br />on Ukraine’s Past and Present</i></a> by Serhii Plokhy, available on<br />Kindle. This is new literature exploring Ukrainian<br />histories, personal stories, publishing and contemporary<br />visual works in Ukraine and architectural writings.<br />Librarians at Huddersfield are going to try to<br />order my complete longlist of nine.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiitfxQGqS6WKZcysTHx1u1jptlEJPxsiqasPUNePt1DQIBRmJsB1-U6PcWnK8b9jUofsoVkQMcT1w96_5q6knoGk3dx9T8Js4_qLizt6hFE3TGooWxk5f0byMA5QDucvshDRbBesvaCDLYoMv9PQBYenhCIdWorWQGYU3fxz5klGGBNRCkYD7OTnnz=s2000" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="2000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiitfxQGqS6WKZcysTHx1u1jptlEJPxsiqasPUNePt1DQIBRmJsB1-U6PcWnK8b9jUofsoVkQMcT1w96_5q6knoGk3dx9T8Js4_qLizt6hFE3TGooWxk5f0byMA5QDucvshDRbBesvaCDLYoMv9PQBYenhCIdWorWQGYU3fxz5klGGBNRCkYD7OTnnz=w640-h640" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Kateryna</i> by Taras Shevchenko, Illustrations by<br />Nikolai Tolmachov, 2018. <i>Source</i>: Osnovy Publishing,<br />n.d.</span><br /></p><p><br /><span> </span>My video recommendation for Ukrainian histories<br />is the <i>Petryshyn Memorial Lecture in Ukrainian Studies</i><br />for 2022. This is an annual lecture by Ukrainian<br />Research Institute Harvard University. This is an<br />analysis of Ukraine’s history as normal, conventional<br />and where it conforms to type. Parts and where<br />Ukraine’s history are exceptional, unusual and<br />different and parts where Ukraine’s histories, borders<br />and boundaries follow a natural and very<br />normal in historical terms, pattern of conflict, or<br />repressions, of protection and historical journeys.<br />This lecture is by Timothy Snyder. Its title <br />is <i>Ukraine: A Normal Country</i>. As at 26 February<br />this movie online has 21,858 views. Introductions <br />are by Serhii Plokhy, Director Ukrainian Research<br />Institute, Harvard University. Moderation is by <br />Emily Channell-Justice, Director, Temerty Contemporary<br />Uraine Program, HURI, Harvard University. Viewing <br />figures for this work show interest and<br />appreciation in Ukraine’s history from an analytical,<br />political and academic point of view. This was a<br />really really brilliant lecture, total running time is<br />1 hour 37 minutes.<br /><br /><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5oRUfQA6efY" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Petryshyn Lecture: Timothy Snyder</i>, 2022. These are for all<br />interviewees involved in my films. Jerry Prytulak,<br />Serhii Plokhy, Philip Colley, Daria Mattingly. I hand<br />delivered packs for Alison Marshall and Reverend Fr<br />Volodymyr Sampara in September 2021 and January 2022.<br />These images show documentation of my postal packs<br />this month. This is using a pop up studio at work. I love<br />this set up and this is my first time using it. I created<br />brilliant quality images in a short space of time<br />using my mobile phone camera. It has been brilliant<br />connecting with participants for this project again. Some of<br />this work appears in a new light as a result of<br />current Ukraine-Russian conflicts. For example maps I<br />created showing Gareth Jones’ journey below.<br />Belgorod is one place where Russian troops are now <br />collecting. This is within walking distance from Kharkiv.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhSxrusvabunhTOCcMDLwgLSrBKORJHob1j3KJ5LNJgre6yNb1RMaM4xObqhundGBrKvB-7D82e9C0m4sGC11k-ljyJfCveYaoeGG8cR4ltcDHhm-WsXraeEMm6Nx5yvSzB--mKpsXQrqohSYSNSLI5otEoLJ4xZv8qMa8-ETnXLkrt04OceYIzD3_5=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhSxrusvabunhTOCcMDLwgLSrBKORJHob1j3KJ5LNJgre6yNb1RMaM4xObqhundGBrKvB-7D82e9C0m4sGC11k-ljyJfCveYaoeGG8cR4ltcDHhm-WsXraeEMm6Nx5yvSzB--mKpsXQrqohSYSNSLI5otEoLJ4xZv8qMa8-ETnXLkrt04OceYIzD3_5=w640-h480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Participants’ Packs, 2022. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjHc6ZgwZszYgAoXf9hU9V2seBitI1LuCn0TyD4hpY0I1rgQ73A4ZqnBK4OwmvyuNecluDlgTK8SyskzuOo2PtRt9W5fN5L-226YlRnHh6VFtFHz37CMqppomGLpOYaYa_jpR1d-mTrMsno3uV7MAuaj_-nOUhwFNpobtVt2dYG4A3e2MjdzaJYagUD=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjHc6ZgwZszYgAoXf9hU9V2seBitI1LuCn0TyD4hpY0I1rgQ73A4ZqnBK4OwmvyuNecluDlgTK8SyskzuOo2PtRt9W5fN5L-226YlRnHh6VFtFHz37CMqppomGLpOYaYa_jpR1d-mTrMsno3uV7MAuaj_-nOUhwFNpobtVt2dYG4A3e2MjdzaJYagUD=w640-h480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Participants’ Packs, 2022. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhA6NIy_AVnXru9-6aXhXC48NIijjxBs95X3o_ffQ-Ml_ue7J0Ak9UDB8sSCVfUb5Ek7d0aEL-Rp5zVVdalFu9W7z1DKUivujSY8c7wkNOMK-uMV48gxZJwPBTB25YmhAX-GASj1vft2JATKwnR-jw_pK1D9H-KjRQerbuccpwPqfYYHmogBSQEcF0i=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhA6NIy_AVnXru9-6aXhXC48NIijjxBs95X3o_ffQ-Ml_ue7J0Ak9UDB8sSCVfUb5Ek7d0aEL-Rp5zVVdalFu9W7z1DKUivujSY8c7wkNOMK-uMV48gxZJwPBTB25YmhAX-GASj1vft2JATKwnR-jw_pK1D9H-KjRQerbuccpwPqfYYHmogBSQEcF0i=w640-h480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Participants’ Packs, 2022. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg1DNTyJLCnzvD29GChFYVp-OIeyXQ-Ud4qrGtP5tdKRrKhj33eth_wWBzDDi30caZOPrOsTjkXlHrlptA74uJmUV0U8VRQ6e1ahgpg_CCAB55VjgNHDOW3-18fBDloYEQewlSr7JTfVrdQr4B8fESi5XN9T1VkJT9VdEkNGlSK_0XUjsGMAonD305H=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg1DNTyJLCnzvD29GChFYVp-OIeyXQ-Ud4qrGtP5tdKRrKhj33eth_wWBzDDi30caZOPrOsTjkXlHrlptA74uJmUV0U8VRQ6e1ahgpg_CCAB55VjgNHDOW3-18fBDloYEQewlSr7JTfVrdQr4B8fESi5XN9T1VkJT9VdEkNGlSK_0XUjsGMAonD305H=w640-h480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Participants’ Packs, 2022. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg91VtCuSyUew4a36C5o5mraJ1NyYlKoaqG7CON-F67g_H2WlnQHFIn4dx6oPM4Ye5QUBzYSfeogjP5Y7-e6O7adxcxhJizM44rVmOw5MwMpEayF6CWxZlZAE1DoJbhgJhMpizxfTLBCLfs-v23l8fHdL3wUctc1eNPKu3oBJCZF5psBJDAycXXu8Er=s1920" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg91VtCuSyUew4a36C5o5mraJ1NyYlKoaqG7CON-F67g_H2WlnQHFIn4dx6oPM4Ye5QUBzYSfeogjP5Y7-e6O7adxcxhJizM44rVmOw5MwMpEayF6CWxZlZAE1DoJbhgJhMpizxfTLBCLfs-v23l8fHdL3wUctc1eNPKu3oBJCZF5psBJDAycXXu8Er=w640-h360" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Gareth Jones’ Walking Route 1932, 2021. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /> </p><p>I have submitted a paper for <i>The Holdomor in<br />Global Perspective</i>. I am<br />focusing on two stories in particular. Gareth Jones’<br />walking routes, maps I use to document his experiences<br />as described by Philip Colley in my interviews. I<br />am exploring Jerry Berman’s letters. This collection of<br />writing as archives. This has been a<br />brilliant experience to connect with others and talk<br />about my practice. I was one of 15 artists selected for<br />this programme at HOME in Manchester, run by Jamie<br />Allan and Alice Wilde. On Wednesday I went to a <br />screening of work by Parham Ghalamdar. These were<br />intricate and delicate animations produced during <br />lockdown. On Friday I was part of a showreel<br />screening of work. <i>The Accident</i> appeared on HOME cinema<br />screens. It was amazing to see my work on a big screen<br />and I have been getting feedback and questions about<br />this work. It has been brilliant to reconnect with this <br />film and to talk about it. On Friday evening I went to<br />a screening of <i>South</i>. This is a film from 1919 by Frank<br />Hurley. A documentary film cut and edited into<br />narrative sequences. This is original footage from<br />Shackleton’s journey to Antarctica. This trip and film<br />documents Shackleton’s lost voyage on the <i>Discovery</i>.<br />I have wanted to see this film footage for years and it<br />was incredible to see this on a big screen. As a bonus<br />these is a whole section of documentary style wildlife<br />footage. This is by Hurley on South Georgia.<br />It includes rare species of animals and these it is<br />possible were not screened filmed before Hurley’s<br />footage. This has been a whole weekend of inspiration,<br />conversations, dialogue and practice.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgkwKAQ_VSrpavcY0HPSsaL_I0LUUGqfFAEwznGACwAZWt2b4ceznh5i4f6CukrV-kbQ_qjVMPuQZQxUMfJa_SjK3_spxSGPt_nzwvClXKlsr8x8GCc05jbeJbXe9UFof2l2lNzx6-jDh3vdpa_avq0-kBK10ktWBWj61JZwGtifYDZ4kQmyvlL65Vr=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgkwKAQ_VSrpavcY0HPSsaL_I0LUUGqfFAEwznGACwAZWt2b4ceznh5i4f6CukrV-kbQ_qjVMPuQZQxUMfJa_SjK3_spxSGPt_nzwvClXKlsr8x8GCc05jbeJbXe9UFof2l2lNzx6-jDh3vdpa_avq0-kBK10ktWBWj61JZwGtifYDZ4kQmyvlL65Vr=w640-h480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>The Accident </i>on big screens at HOME, Manchester, 2022.<br /><i>Source</i>: Artist.</span><br /> </p><p><span> </span>One focus is exploring conditions and creative productivity.<br />I have a graph of my three films. Between each film<br />I plotted creativity on my y-axis, creative fulfillment<br />and time on my x-axis. After reflection on this I am<br />changing my objectives. Rather than intense highs and<br />extreme lows in productivity I am now aiming for a<br />gentle upward curve. I want to find a form of<br />equanimity where highs and lows balance and create<br />a smoother graph. This was a brilliant exercise.<br />I love graphs and mapping and it has been fascinating<br />to see a visual document of my film journey. Saturday<br />morning’s workshop was by artist April Lin 林森.<br />This was about access riders. I used my time to<br />map and create a documentation project for my<br />yellow notebooks. I have now 167 complete notebooks.<br />These are now discontinued from Rymans. My next<br />project is I am going to edit these 167 notebooks<br />into one notebook and rebind these pages. I am<br />going to include a catalogue. This is my Easter<br />project. It has been brilliant spending time in Manchester.<br />I spent Saturday night eating noodles in Northern <br />Quarter. I have inspiration and a lot of work about<br />practical conditions, how to create, find and map<br />inspiration, and what practical conditions lead to this<br />point and create inspiring experiences.<br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh4zJjmduEViL1G2_Vp9JonqFmZPn4JJSj9r8RSTljksr7Ib5irydlyWxhcfHp23hbqSAf-4JbVrhbHlJuu2VJYnuvTUN9bHvqWSoQGOOwG90JOSyGJmTGVMQ7LCjaXiKMc5o3TnuL8VtaWYD0z6WrLbJynDQF7tnhAU62NTaHVSpDGHy3UgL4pTiuT=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh4zJjmduEViL1G2_Vp9JonqFmZPn4JJSj9r8RSTljksr7Ib5irydlyWxhcfHp23hbqSAf-4JbVrhbHlJuu2VJYnuvTUN9bHvqWSoQGOOwG90JOSyGJmTGVMQ7LCjaXiKMc5o3TnuL8VtaWYD0z6WrLbJynDQF7tnhAU62NTaHVSpDGHy3UgL4pTiuT=w640-h480" width="640" /></a></div><p><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>The Dhammapada</i>: Film Inspiration Workshop, 2022.<br /><i>Source</i>: Artist.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiFsOpqs3ler_rp1nLiFfaE5_7dbYiJenNnP-2KjRK5We9bJj955gs-YIg3JwpIRwQyNZ5RtbChrfXtn7kNd-_94fJhQoof9kM8PfhXNFG_yI1HtxS9I-LsEc-LWFlwxJRZwWTniy24oX8lP0iQRnMuHleprGhBwxj_hF-IVTixL8FO0gBIvXeOcrKV=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiFsOpqs3ler_rp1nLiFfaE5_7dbYiJenNnP-2KjRK5We9bJj955gs-YIg3JwpIRwQyNZ5RtbChrfXtn7kNd-_94fJhQoof9kM8PfhXNFG_yI1HtxS9I-LsEc-LWFlwxJRZwWTniy24oX8lP0iQRnMuHleprGhBwxj_hF-IVTixL8FO0gBIvXeOcrKV=w640-h480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Importance and Achievability Graphs: Sunday, 2022.<br /><i>Source</i>: Artist.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjcQ7CYW2OK3Kr7_VJ1sKS5gSHfBRzEemUMl46GChCW-vVVracU2qmOSj_YNTx8LyTJlOQXh3CltWgwRJNchFnPXmTrZdpRF3GzGF_7uC90ULt104ToFVjkPWzZHLl2OwwXuSsB9daZsaiOAkASnGs7VyAoPfmARqvwy6dctOP4KYs0S-SAkkiSPfe9=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjcQ7CYW2OK3Kr7_VJ1sKS5gSHfBRzEemUMl46GChCW-vVVracU2qmOSj_YNTx8LyTJlOQXh3CltWgwRJNchFnPXmTrZdpRF3GzGF_7uC90ULt104ToFVjkPWzZHLl2OwwXuSsB9daZsaiOAkASnGs7VyAoPfmARqvwy6dctOP4KYs0S-SAkkiSPfe9=w640-h480" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Creative Fulfillment Graphs, 2022. <i>Source</i>: Artist.</span><br /><br /><br /> Today I have been considering how to explore<br />distribution and working on new projects. Sunday<br />morning’s workshop was Cinecaravan with artists<br />Laura Taillefer Viñas, Luisa Mello, Atsushi Kuwayama,<br />Kopal Joshy and Jamie Allan’s work. This included<br />discussion on alternative distribution models. I<br />hadn’t considered this for <i>Recipes for Baking Bread</i>.<br />I have some brilliant ideas about how to connect<br />with Ukrainian audiences and smaller communities<br />with my films. Projects in this presentation included<br />discussion about literature, voice and script. This<br />was inspiring, I hadn’t and haven’t <br />considered relationships between reading, fiction,<br />voice, tone and truth in documentary and how to <br />create scripts. I’d love to do more work on this. This<br />morning I got up early and spent my first time in<br />MMU All Saints Library for two years. I am<br />re-writing my methodologies. I am adding<br />definitions of autoethnographic research and<br />strengthening everything with three key pieces of<br />literature by Adams & Holman Jones (2014),<br />Hughes & Pennington (2017) and a new book by<br />Poulos from 2021. This afternoon was a sound<br />walk, experiencing three visual shots and narratives<br />through sound. This reminded me of radio edits<br />and my start points for <i>Recipes for Baking Bread</i>.<br />Afterwards I spoke about Eisenstein’s work in<br />architecture and film. This exercise reminded me of<br />Eisenstein’s ideas of exploring Acropolis buildings in<br />Athens. Eisenstein’s ideas are a person walks around<br />these ancient buildings and experiences long shots,<br />wide shots, close ups and relationships between<br />visuals in a similar way to experiencing film.<br />Eisenstein describes differences between those <br />processes as a director presenting film to an audience<br />and in architecture a person walking round to experience<br />buildings from their own point of view.<br />(Eisenstein, 1991, p. 60). I’ve loved this<br />weekend. I have met some brilliant people and had a<br />lot of space to think and talk about my practice.<br />My leaving ideas are about growth and expansion,<br />where I take my practice. Things I do with my<br />work and a lot of space to be able to explore bigger<br />ideas and a bigger vision outside my everyday<br />tasks.<br /><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">References:<br /><br />Adams, T. On Monday 24th of<br />January <i>Recipes for Baking Bread</i> appeared at<br />British Shorts. This is a brilliant festival of short, UK<br />films in Berlin. This programme includes a special of<br />work by Max Cooper and McGloughlin Brothers. Both of<br />these artists were huge inspirations for <i>Recipes for<br />Baking Bread</i>. Max Cooper appeared to me by<br />production executive on Recipes for Baking Bread,<br />Richard Gort. Richard showed me Cooper’s audio and<br />I used this as part of my brief for composter Yoni<br />Collier. This is my first festival screening for <i>Recipes<br />for Baking Bread</i>. A full programme is online<br /><a href="https://www.britishshorts.de/">https://www.britishshorts.de/</a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg6Rfn52L19eI1No38GRB2RtO_q7wJ7b-PO3vhb2RrQ36oRMwKaAedFB40zyO5jxGPrbPT1_dOPqEisEG3abIN6OsvxEXKr68CJ4xbUvVgrhWY10pgFab776bxeM-TJubaJ2baP9Jnc7WTkzVq9D_nhD7SxYDKt_QT0ogJSVC3920WpFj3kqNbK9Lta=s1920" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg6Rfn52L19eI1No38GRB2RtO_q7wJ7b-PO3vhb2RrQ36oRMwKaAedFB40zyO5jxGPrbPT1_dOPqEisEG3abIN6OsvxEXKr68CJ4xbUvVgrhWY10pgFab776bxeM-TJubaJ2baP9Jnc7WTkzVq9D_nhD7SxYDKt_QT0ogJSVC3920WpFj3kqNbK9Lta=w640-h360" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Recipes for Baking Bread</i>: British Shorts Press, 2022.<br /><i>Source</i>: Artist.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgm7iY8nzv95s1DX9ZHnHD5T9eqe-bYtNiLbsR2ADLHgF8AiL2A-7Xi5zytfIaIkatpngpxFNdRUO7kBNsvyp0tM0HoHdspTLmIviiPEO8UDGvNXwv56WC6ydpU-Y7xxg7rCNSvZwC2piYKlfOFxuPHANufrzt17wS-8_NnRLfR2GGF-M4939VmB1R3=s1920" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgm7iY8nzv95s1DX9ZHnHD5T9eqe-bYtNiLbsR2ADLHgF8AiL2A-7Xi5zytfIaIkatpngpxFNdRUO7kBNsvyp0tM0HoHdspTLmIviiPEO8UDGvNXwv56WC6ydpU-Y7xxg7rCNSvZwC2piYKlfOFxuPHANufrzt17wS-8_NnRLfR2GGF-M4939VmB1R3=w640-h360" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Recipes for Baking Bread</i>: British Shorts Press 2022.<br /><i>Source</i>: Artist.</span><br /><br /> As part of screenings at British Shorts I also have an<br />interview online. This is with British online magazine<br />The New Current. A link is online here:<br /><a href="https://www.thenewcurrent.co.uk/sara-nesteruk">https://www.thenewcurrent.co.uk/sara-nesteruk</a>. This interview is<br />my discussion of my academic practice, theories and<br />production on <i>Recipes for Baking Bread</i>. I describe<br />influences from poetry, film, theories and my intentions<br />and relationships to these stories. I also include details<br />of collaborators on this project and their roles and<br />contributions to my work. Two images appear in this<br />article. My first is a missing scene from <i>The Accident</i>.<br />This I included when I first found out about Holodomor.<br />Andrea Lioy who was script advisor for <i>The Accident</i><br />encouraged me to remove this scene from my first film. <br />Andrea’s perspective was stories of Holodomor were too<br />big for my existing narrative. When I removed this<br />scene I made a commitment to making a new film<br />about Holodomor. This is my edited scene. My<br />second image is of my storyboards for <i>Recipes for<br />Baking Bread</i>. This has been a brilliant opportunity <br />for press around my project and to describe my<br />work and ideas in detail, outside of academic contexts.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgTubCGnCcLjt2ozAXODOLNqztSC4XYBGMQwzzsnzR7U2g-JypepLrY8PEtgJnCiwk0tpwKE67l7YNIDwOdyrsLN77ApMkZbzNLIUjB77YlAvYTURCJZ4lowexichZlye-mMy5M_nkf9g4YX8Gs2LFAuo1mkVtCB93ebXC5shu4fCRGEb_B1sXJd8NZ=s3500" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="3500" height="106" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgTubCGnCcLjt2ozAXODOLNqztSC4XYBGMQwzzsnzR7U2g-JypepLrY8PEtgJnCiwk0tpwKE67l7YNIDwOdyrsLN77ApMkZbzNLIUjB77YlAvYTURCJZ4lowexichZlye-mMy5M_nkf9g4YX8Gs2LFAuo1mkVtCB93ebXC5shu4fCRGEb_B1sXJd8NZ=w640-h106" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>The Accident</i>, Missing Scene, 2007. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiUmbVKedj0ZPVinVUKcxzhCoeTzEYEE-_5iZ2dZxcWMCQ2AXrKCB4Dm2-ny-9hOv6yjL2h6cPmjqAQ2YPOIsopWsV_ksfZfsozg2IrHitTq-XwUXmwgvcUeyxCX9LSbkmnE-48UBI5EPMZgd-Yf_2Mt_Bv_JuoBWizI4mElsgKhpoRIfCqoRYGKFfG=s3508" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2480" data-original-width="3508" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiUmbVKedj0ZPVinVUKcxzhCoeTzEYEE-_5iZ2dZxcWMCQ2AXrKCB4Dm2-ny-9hOv6yjL2h6cPmjqAQ2YPOIsopWsV_ksfZfsozg2IrHitTq-XwUXmwgvcUeyxCX9LSbkmnE-48UBI5EPMZgd-Yf_2Mt_Bv_JuoBWizI4mElsgKhpoRIfCqoRYGKFfG=w640-h452" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Recipes for Baking Bread</i>: Storyboards, 2021. <i>Source</i>:<br />Author.</span><br /><br /> This week I received notification of a successful<br />application for HOME Artists Film Lab. This takes<br />place in February. This is a brilliant opportunity to<br />meet and talk with other creatives, film directors<br />and artists. This is a three day event. It includes<br />artists’ screenings of films. I am screening <i>The Accident</i>.<br />It also includes artists’ workshops, discussion and<br />events. I am excited to appear in this with 14<br />other artists and directors. My intentions and<br />ideas are about discussion and sharing of practice.<br />Reflecting on my previous projects, inspiration and<br />ideas for future projects, and in particular I’d love to<br />develop ideas and strategies around screening,<br />distribution and audiences for Recipes for Baking<br />Bread. All three of these opportunities are<br />exciting ways to reflect back on my processes in<br />this project.<br /><br /></p><br /><br /><br /><br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4970070625950370448.post-10509267458432993432022-01-07T07:39:00.001-08:002022-01-07T07:39:40.094-08:00Last ever research supervision meeting<p>Malcom Muggeridge, Mr Jones, men should<br />wear skirts, etsy ketsy, Greek, ancient<br />Greek, retrieving Ukrainian language, Foosta,<br />bedroom, ironing, outfits, meeting at 1.30pm,<br />reception, visuals, virtual tours, changes and<br />additions, organising thoughts about music<br />and film, polyphonic voice, Bakhtin, depth<br />and time, seating arrangements, texting and<br />notes, British Shorts festival in Berlin,<br />Max Cooper, press, external examiners,<br />medals and Ukrainian recognition,<br />archives and archiving, awards,<br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4970070625950370448.post-88065647430686742272022-01-05T08:54:00.000-08:002022-01-05T08:54:05.171-08:00Mock Viva:<p>Wednesday 5th January 2022.<br /><br />Differences and contributions, Freud, uncanny,<br />Polyphonic voice, drawing as archiving, Bibliographies,<br />John Berger, Kentridge, Case Studies, examples<br />and page numbers, in person, online, polyphonic <br />voice, music, Bakhtin, An(e)motion, objects<br />and emotions. I have<br />15 sections in total, including duplicate sections. These<br />duplicate and composite sections are for opening and<br />closing materials. Each section is with three core<br />concepts. I am referencing these for quick access in my<br />viva. My evidence is using PEAS, Point, Evidence, <br />Analysis and So what. This structure I use in my<br />writing. For my answers I am giving evidence from<br />my written work in my thesis. My next steps<br />are to map my illustrations with page numbers.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjE44s8ZLFvudNA-NKOwh6Dg2pR9hMF1YKsAMsuhJLLQUTol3RljQfUiD3mIoi-Os5LI59mGhxrMLoqcwRE2xAsZ_mvyllrT6tkG6qzNuF8xM8cHJCegcOCmbfNj-0Qzu05t8QUG6DFWgm-hV4cittIfQTNe_RHKu8hyOeqQ9MC3QxBDSMLugx7EU_f=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjE44s8ZLFvudNA-NKOwh6Dg2pR9hMF1YKsAMsuhJLLQUTol3RljQfUiD3mIoi-Os5LI59mGhxrMLoqcwRE2xAsZ_mvyllrT6tkG6qzNuF8xM8cHJCegcOCmbfNj-0Qzu05t8QUG6DFWgm-hV4cittIfQTNe_RHKu8hyOeqQ9MC3QxBDSMLugx7EU_f=w640-h480" width="640" /></a><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />Thesis Mark ups: Black Soil Page, 2021. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhOFKrggXdQv71OLVuaWWSoyYevMxMsr-8z0lAyKuDIqurCU6icwLiL2E7_4noEghayvU3EOrg9Nv5nUVBLG4dmO2JTGzqxKFQyTWdWM3iC9SYEk4zSaT01CNmsiYUwyZKVX9FU957a1VhqaHwr2nHLsOtwSRVsdLoYRqSWhROUfdePQ-0f9PxjQanI=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2133" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhOFKrggXdQv71OLVuaWWSoyYevMxMsr-8z0lAyKuDIqurCU6icwLiL2E7_4noEghayvU3EOrg9Nv5nUVBLG4dmO2JTGzqxKFQyTWdWM3iC9SYEk4zSaT01CNmsiYUwyZKVX9FU957a1VhqaHwr2nHLsOtwSRVsdLoYRqSWhROUfdePQ-0f9PxjQanI=w640-h480" width="640" /></a><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />Thesis Mark ups: Complete thesis, 2021. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg2sotnMnzXC-mebw0P4gTo7Gzn-n_DoHExqWpFwMj3tziD2vHAzhuFl9i73D1THvYRmiuvmS83YtxY3sntpbrUJTL6ExLlrhL-Y3Cn2_Z9jpJy0kW2prqYIYvQxSPoZTblRaKcHgQ3YkrucKYT8KJc5t0aAGE6bdzkPo91Oj4_p5IyYOkUau1AqOWp=s2133" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2133" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg2sotnMnzXC-mebw0P4gTo7Gzn-n_DoHExqWpFwMj3tziD2vHAzhuFl9i73D1THvYRmiuvmS83YtxY3sntpbrUJTL6ExLlrhL-Y3Cn2_Z9jpJy0kW2prqYIYvQxSPoZTblRaKcHgQ3YkrucKYT8KJc5t0aAGE6bdzkPo91Oj4_p5IyYOkUau1AqOWp=w480-h640" width="480" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Thesis Mark ups: Structures, 2021. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span></p><br /><br /><br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4970070625950370448.post-78504941640880615662021-12-18T06:16:00.000-08:002021-12-18T06:16:40.770-08:00Viva Preparations and Christmas Decorations<p>I am preparing for my viva. Resources I am using<br />include vitae.ac.uk (2021), some brilliant resources<br />from Leeds Beckett University and two books. The first<br />of these is <i>How to Survive Your Viva</i> by Rowena<br />Murray (2015). A second book is <i>The Doctoral Examination<br />Process</i> by Penny Tinkler and Carolyn Jackson (2004).<br />These include practical tips and suggestions for<br />deconstructing my writing. My next steps are a<br />physical mock up of my printed thesis with<br />highlighted sections and chapter summaries. I am<br />dissecting each chapter using a paragraph, using a<br />sentence and constructing questions and answers from<br />these texts. This is defending my knowledge using<br />three key theories to bring my answers back to.<br /><br /></p><blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/CL9_JNvF7Iv/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255) none repeat scroll 0% 0%; These<br />are inspired by a birthday trip to NQ64 in Manchester.<br />This is a retro arcade games venue. My decorations<br />are from TV programmes and computer games in 1970s<br />and 1980s. I have four: <i>Thundercats</i> (TV programme<br />1985–1989); <i>Pacman</i> (computer game, 1980);<br /><i>Track and Field</i> (ZX Spectrum and arcade game, 1984) and<br /><i>Lemmings</i> (Amiga, 1991). These are laser cut on 4mm<br />plywood. I include a falling lemming from an arcade and<br />Amiga game. This is on a long string, falling off my<br />Christmas tree. This bitmap and decoration was<br />inspiration for my contributions to this months<br />Castlefield Gallery event. This was an event by artist<br />Jackie Haynes and includes an audio version of<br />classic Christmas songs. This event was <i>A Round of<br />Toasts</i>.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiuGwq1cyj0wtAbh-sWIJC0viohiKQIpu4MnrC09F3QE1E_mzOxHOFLkWDNZ5hYhhzUgqA2wbeTlqs8JHk16azDQ7pWnAtaEqHb_guJJ2dheW7aa117x3UySB-PCbe3V2SHHvHpIYAebQpEpYCAg58aqFPv59298WVR8TEkdFWn8-oudQSXDUTX9Waj=s1688" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1142" data-original-width="1688" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiuGwq1cyj0wtAbh-sWIJC0viohiKQIpu4MnrC09F3QE1E_mzOxHOFLkWDNZ5hYhhzUgqA2wbeTlqs8JHk16azDQ7pWnAtaEqHb_guJJ2dheW7aa117x3UySB-PCbe3V2SHHvHpIYAebQpEpYCAg58aqFPv59298WVR8TEkdFWn8-oudQSXDUTX9Waj=w640-h432" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Track and Field</i>, 1984. This work is from research from<br />the British Council Shorts Scheme and Key Festival<br />list (British Council, 2021). I have documents from<br />BFI supported festivals and a brilliant article<br />from studiokamp outlining successful film<br />festival strategies (studiokamp, 2021). I am<br />using animation-festivals.com as a definitive<br />guide to festival dates and Film Freeway as my<br />most common submission platform (animation-<br />festivals.com, 2021; FilmFreeway, 2021). There are<br />four phases to my launch from BAFTA qualifying<br />festivals to online launches. My strategy is<br />for largest audiences for low cost and possibilities<br />for high profile exposure and awards. This<br />strategy runs from September 2021 – September 2022.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjsfPQAzFfX7pFXSjft9WWVnN-x7qDSGyKj4dBT_K17mSshKhbIIWpZzMERdlIkP6cXI8RhmdlWy1XNJKWnplSF_Cg8x2F9F8eh2C2YOVVkHIJbNh89cB7PtvkmtAT67_MxDAdetvOEQI/s2688/Recipes+for+Baking+Bread+Festival+Submissions.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1170" data-original-width="2688" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjsfPQAzFfX7pFXSjft9WWVnN-x7qDSGyKj4dBT_K17mSshKhbIIWpZzMERdlIkP6cXI8RhmdlWy1XNJKWnplSF_Cg8x2F9F8eh2C2YOVVkHIJbNh89cB7PtvkmtAT67_MxDAdetvOEQI/w640-h278/Recipes+for+Baking+Bread+Festival+Submissions.png" width="640" /></a></p><p><span style="font-size: x-small;">Festival Submissions Spreadsheets, 2021. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik6t94jaxm4j9aDuS8IHdQMlw19kW5XKrE8nwjrSQ5UTRRq6Dx8kTVPhp2Qf5CLJdwNibsdmTFY9g-Hlq5-F5Lw9y7dZ2SCzn9CZBjqIe6bIH8rYbtNYLzqtx91uHfrQtuaiAAq2jvkdA/s1328/Recipes+for+Baking+Bread+Festival+Strategies.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1324" data-original-width="1328" height="638" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik6t94jaxm4j9aDuS8IHdQMlw19kW5XKrE8nwjrSQ5UTRRq6Dx8kTVPhp2Qf5CLJdwNibsdmTFY9g-Hlq5-F5Lw9y7dZ2SCzn9CZBjqIe6bIH8rYbtNYLzqtx91uHfrQtuaiAAq2jvkdA/w640-h638/Recipes+for+Baking+Bread+Festival+Strategies.png" width="640" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Recipes for Baking Bread</i>: Film Festival Strategies, 2021.<br /><i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">References:</span><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Studiokamp (2021). My paper title is <i>Rodin, Rilke and Animated<br />Loops</i>. This is exploring motion and forms in poetry, in<br />sculpture and in motion graphics. I am using <i>The<br />Rodin Books</i> [1903–07] (1986) written by Rainer Maria<br />Rilke as my starting point. In these, Rilke describes<br />movement in Rodin’s art. There are some beautiful<br />and vivid descriptions of a piece of motion returning to<br />itself, returning to marble. I am taking this idea and<br />applying it to animated loops, boils in motion<br />graphics and giving examples from <i>Recipes for Baking<br />Bread</i>. In Rilke’s writing he compares this to<br />ancient cities, whose walls contain all public life<br />(Rilke, 1986, pp. 14–15). Bakhtin’s writings have an<br />almost identical description and I am comparing<br />these two forms. I am also including Bakhtin’s ideas<br />of chronotopes, uses of time and space taken from<br />Einstein’s ideas of relativity. Bakhtin applies<br />these to novels. I have a brilliant piece of analysis<br />by Christopher Bollas in <i>Meaning and Melancholia</i><br />(2018). This is Bollas giving descriptions on work by<br />Albert Camus, <i>The Outsider</i> (2000). This is a<br />vivid articulation of a street scene in Camus’ novel<br />and is an example of a chronotope in action. I want to<br />compare this street scene to street scenes in<br /><i>Recipes for Baking Bread</i>. I include these in my<br />films to give references to what happened after<br />Holodomor. People travelled to cities to find food,<br />only to die from starvation when they arrived.<br />There are descriptions in Grossman’s novels,<br /><i>Everything Flows</i> (2011) of eerie and quiet queues in<br />streets where hungry peasants bought bread. Many of<br />these people were too hungry to eat, or survive.<br />Jerry Berman’s letters have similar examples of street<br />scenes. Enormous queues and an eerie, uncanny feeling.<br /> This conference is a brilliant opportunity to explore themes<br />of my paper and present my finished works. It takes<br />place in February 2022.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2vCNzvn8Oxn9IOO3ACh32HkouQAG_Is6Cp6gAPcRsdA1G4XEBPPBqWt_Ixm1krBuiCxaAWQuiH-P33IvWlj5WfJut7eJEfR3GMDmR8_O7wdPcPCj01QlSesmYDwdQc7a1N-FrGyPTigw/s2048/Bakhtin+Bakhtin+and+Bollas.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1488" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2vCNzvn8Oxn9IOO3ACh32HkouQAG_Is6Cp6gAPcRsdA1G4XEBPPBqWt_Ixm1krBuiCxaAWQuiH-P33IvWlj5WfJut7eJEfR3GMDmR8_O7wdPcPCj01QlSesmYDwdQc7a1N-FrGyPTigw/w466-h640/Bakhtin+Bakhtin+and+Bollas.jpeg" width="466" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">Drawings of Books: Sculpture and Poetry, 2021. <i>Source</i>: Author.</span><br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFFh2O4THa3E5cubbCPK26mzK_0l4_1nOKtl990l50zEk1nK-Za8NJolE4uVEdAA1sYT4Cjv4diE9eTLULnyQxdceBJh21NEk57a2DGTmcGvcZN3FkkZYyP8ptBPbWD_61i0nB9QgqCNY/s1920/12.10+Stills+Torgsin.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFFh2O4THa3E5cubbCPK26mzK_0l4_1nOKtl990l50zEk1nK-Za8NJolE4uVEdAA1sYT4Cjv4diE9eTLULnyQxdceBJh21NEk57a2DGTmcGvcZN3FkkZYyP8ptBPbWD_61i0nB9QgqCNY/w640-h360/12.10+Stills+Torgsin.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p><span style="font-size: x-small;">Recipes for Baking Bread: Street Scenes, 2021. <i>Source</i>:<br />Author.</span><br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizNfHWMmgchyKvT3F_IGbveUa5B-c2lBtNb5XCmE47EleUKCkrmO-GGZ6R6lVoJwTOZLLmp-U4QGGfz47mrwbhPUr7PYYaDbyGcU08QxpknYpoMDlzexFXnprGyNbUJZXycNL1dlcYYhA/s800/Wienerberger.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="578" data-original-width="800" height="462" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizNfHWMmgchyKvT3F_IGbveUa5B-c2lBtNb5XCmE47EleUKCkrmO-GGZ6R6lVoJwTOZLLmp-U4QGGfz47mrwbhPUr7PYYaDbyGcU08QxpknYpoMDlzexFXnprGyNbUJZXycNL1dlcYYhA/w640-h462/Wienerberger.png" width="640" /></a></div><p><span style="font-size: x-small;">Photos of queues outside a Torgsin store, near<br />Kharkiv, early 1930s. This includes <i>I am Cuba</i>, <i>Я – Куба</i>.<br />This is a Russian and Cuban co-production. Russian<br />production was by Soviet film studio Mosfilm.<br />Four stories tell perspectives of Cuban life in early<br />1960s. This is available from Soviet Movies Online,<br />a brilliant resource for Soviet, European, Ukrainian<br />and Polish cinema. This includes some fascinating<br />80s and 90s shows including <i>Dekalog</i>, a Polish<br />production form 1989 based on ten commandments,<br />all set in one housing estate in Warsaw.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkUMxieraTxqX_KVclozzPzzai6hxDl7ySzLuDNlK9qG5x_ewff80cmA_O_4NyyTIUybLjd8ijYqT3kbWfMkayKtj8YPFbmgNUWKLHtMVvssD6QfXb3T1drXwCkr-U4WXKFVqRU4tjOcE/s1039/Soy+Cuba.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1039" data-original-width="739" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkUMxieraTxqX_KVclozzPzzai6hxDl7ySzLuDNlK9qG5x_ewff80cmA_O_4NyyTIUybLjd8ijYqT3kbWfMkayKtj8YPFbmgNUWKLHtMVvssD6QfXb3T1drXwCkr-U4WXKFVqRU4tjOcE/w456-h640/Soy+Cuba.jpg" width="456" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>I am Cuba</i> (<i>Я – Куба</i>) directed by Mikhail<br />Kalatozov, 1964. <i>Source</i>: Soviet Movies Online, n.d.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLsNaDYixMlPHFbCpov51Ls6Fxd-GyWj3h0dTupHvbUd-Y0WIyPuuJaG4WpsrepOoRoGWFJyfaJltwt3qDai5YsvRyQeTzK0c1TcYTeCyB0rF8i_-QfcigLzq2kA29LjRAcZkeHKqFr6o/s1040/Dekalog+1.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1040" data-original-width="740" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLsNaDYixMlPHFbCpov51Ls6Fxd-GyWj3h0dTupHvbUd-Y0WIyPuuJaG4WpsrepOoRoGWFJyfaJltwt3qDai5YsvRyQeTzK0c1TcYTeCyB0rF8i_-QfcigLzq2kA29LjRAcZkeHKqFr6o/w456-h640/Dekalog+1.png" width="456" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Dekalog: One</i> directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski,<br />1989. <i>Source</i>: Eastern European Movies, n.d.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">References:<br /><br />Soviet Movies Online (n.d.) <i>I am Cuba</i> [Online].
