On Monday the 28th of August, I spent a day
researching at the Dovhenko Centre in Kyiv,
a massive archive, research centre, and space,
expanding to accommodate physical
screenings exhibitions and events, ideas to
show and display material from the collections
The centre is, and was, one of the coolest places
I have ever visited. A repository and archive
dedicated to Oleksandr Dovzhenko, a
Ukrainian film mater. Dozhenko make
Soviet propoganda, and National, Ukrainian
propoganda. The two things are unresolved,
they don't go together for me.
He was an innovative film maker, and
struggled to work creativelt under Stalin's
rule.
The centre had an enormous collection of stacks,
and stacks, of magazines, publications. I had
ordered some material, randomly from the archives
when I was in the UK. I forgot I did this when I
arrived, some of it was about Alcoholism, I was
sure I was reading it right, and didn't
understand why the archivists had found it
for me. It was short stories from the 1930's.
I didn't understand it, I spent the morning
reading the Ukrainian words, quietly, it was
relazing, and taking photos of the things around
me. I read a fantastic essay, in English,
about Dovhenko's film, Earth, it described
his work as about depth, and bread(th)
exploring deeply, and widely, using huge casts,
and landscapes of people. I have been exploring
the use of a similar axis for my literature
review. The point wehre animation meets
motion graphics, and the central axis of me
work, currently the central axis is about
self and the inner world, and other, the external.
For example, Rilke, at the bottom, a poet and
artist, about self, and inner feelings. And
Hannah Arendt representing something of the
opposite, discussion and perspective, the other.
